Internship: Improving the protein content of plant-based cheese analogues

We are looking for an intern to help us improve the protein content and quality of our plant-based spreads. This project is multidisciplinary as it requires you to combine different dimensions of sustainability, nutrition, marketing,food technology and sensory science.

Improving the protein content of plant-based cheese analogues (Internship)

The goal of this project is to improve the protein content and quality of our plant-based spreads. You will perform a literature review exploring sustainable, local and cost-effective protein sources, plan and execute batch-scale and production-scale experiments and organize tastings for the team. This project is multidisciplinary as it requires you to combine different dimensions of sustainability, nutrition, marketing,
food technology and sensory science. And of course there is room for your own ideas and insights! This internship is a good opportunity to put theory into practice, and be part of a growing innovative company.

In this internship, you will be working on location with our friendly team, but can also work from home part of the week. This project will start September 2025, with a duration of 6 months working 4 days a week. You will receive a monthly compensation of €250 and travel costs will be covered.

Key responsibilities
● Research national and international health standards and nutrition claims for plant-based products to define targets for the products
● Perform market research of protein-rich ingredients
● Design and execute R&D experiments
● Execute and analyse sensory tests
● Deliver an improved recipe of the products
● Taste lots of vegan cheese!

Education and experience
● Third or fourth-year student Food Technology or similar field
● Basic knowledge of nutrition
● Able to work in a fast-paced start-up environment
● Independent with a practical attitude
● English or Dutch (some Dutch skills are beneficial but not necessary)
● Ideally: interest in plant-based food

The internship company
MAX&BIEN produces culinary plant-based cheeses. The company was founded in 2018, and has since then launched the first plant-based Gouda cheese wheel and won several awards with their products, which are available in Jumbo, various wholesalers and restaurants. With a background in the culinary world and food science, their focus is always on making their products delicious, nutritious and sustainable. We work in a small and social team of 5-6 people, and care about creating a safe, fruitful and fun work environment.

Internship – FSSC 22000 certification at Max&Bien

Are you a university student in Food Technology, Food Safety or a related field? Ready to turn theory into practice at a growing plant-based food start-up? We are looking for an intern to help us get FSSC 22000 certified.

Internship
The main goal of this project is to manage the FSSC 22000 certification process at our plant-based cheese production site in the lively Houthavens neighbourhood in Amsterdam. You will be involved in the various stages of the certification process, in collaboration with a consultancy company. The work will consist of integrating ISO22000 requirements with relevant prerequisite programmes for the plant-based food sector and implementing a Food Safety Management System (FSMS).

Topics related to the certification process are food fraud policy, food safety and quality culture, allergen management, food defense, environmental monitoring, quality control, food waste management, preventing cross- contamination, communication, organizing trainings, verification by performing internal audits, and preparing the company management for external audits.

This internship is a good opportunity to put theory into practice, and be part of a small and growing innovative company taking its next step in professionalization. In this hybrid internship, you will be working on location with our friendly team, but can also work from home part of the week. This project will start mid-May 2025 (in mutual agreement), with a duration of 5- 6 months working 4 days a week. Compensation will be €250 per month, travel expenses can be covered.

Key responsibilities

  • Attending meetings and collaborating with an external FSSC 22000 certification consultancy agency
  • Organising and filling out required documents for FSSC 22000 certification, including our HACCP data
  • Translating FSSC 22000 requirements (GMP/PRP, HACCP, management) into usable documents and practical instructions, such as standard operation procedures (SOPs), checklists and staff training sessions
  • Implementation of the FSMS (i.e. advising the management, documentation, verification procedures)
  • Providing the company with the insight and experience to maintain the system in future production facilities
  • Perform quality and safety tests on our products and production facility
  • The research scope can be extended to include how the FSSC-22000 framework can be applied
  • to improve the sustainability of the company
  • Taste lots of vegan cheese!

Education and experience

  • Student in Food Technology, Food Quality, Food Safety or a similar field
  • Knowledge of internationally recognized food safety norms (ISO22000, FSSC 22000, IFS, BRCGS)
  • Able to work in a fast-paced start-up environment

At our production facility for plant-based cheese in Amsterdam, we’re looking for a new colleague to come and strengthen our friendly team.

Who are you?

You are a team player who is used to doing physical work. You are motivated with a quality mindset. You are punctual but flexible. You love learning and have the ambition to advance within a production environment. You have an affinity with plant-based food.

Together with the production manager, you will be involved in the production of various plant-based cheeses. As a production operative, you will ensure that the production process runs smoothly. Besides that, you will be responsible for goods receipt, checking, putting away and packing. You will also work hygienically and keep the production area clean and tidy.

You will work in all areas of production. This will help you get to know the company and all its production processes so that you will soon become broadly deployable.

  • Experience as a production operative within the food sector is preferred
  • You are enthusiastic and hard working
  • You have basic knowledge of food safety and hygiene (HACCP)
  • You are used to following instructions and protocols
  • You have an affinity with plant-based food and plant-based cheese
  • You can identify with our mission to develop tasty cheese and dairy alternatives as a way of inspiring people to follow a plant-based diet.
